Arnaud Desjardins - Buddhism 1

Jan-8-2009 By Admin

In 1963, for the first time, the Dalai Lama allowed a Westerner, Desjardins, to film the heart of the Tibetan tradition. These two films were originally shown on French television in the 1960's and are a wonderful testimony, revealing some of Tibet's foremost masters as they were then. It includes footage of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, the Sixteenth Karmapa, Dudjom Rinpoche, Ling Rinpoche, Chatral Rinpoche, Sakya Trizin, and the yogis Abo Rinpoche and Lopon Sonam Zangpo. The original sixties commentaries have been retained, even though it may sound a bit dated in places. "These portraits of the legendary Tibetan masters are not simply a unique historical record, not only a stunning and moving inspiration for now and for the future, but an extraordinary testimony, a treasure." -Sogyal Rinpoche.

Song of Repentance 懺悔歌

From: MESSAGE OF THE TIBETANS. by Arnaud Desjardins This is some of the most impressive footage we have seen. Filmed in the mid-sixties in India, Sikkim and Bhutan by Arnaud Desjardins in consultation with Sonam Topgey Kazi, the senior interpreter to the Dalai Lama at that time. There are many of the older renowned masters shown here: H.H. the Dalai Lama, H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche, H.H. Gyalwa Karmapa, H.H. Sakya Trizin, Dugpa Dukse Rinpoche, Chatral Rinpoche, the yogis Abo Rinpoche and Lopon Sonam Zangpo, H.E. Tai Situ Rinpoche and H.E. Shamar Rinpoche as young tulkus, as well as many other eminent masters! Each film is full of wonderful images of these lamas and monks performing rituals and meditations. There are unusual scenes of yogis performing preparatory meditation exercises. "These portraits of the legendary Tibetan masters are not simply a unique historical record, not only a stunning and moving inspiration for now and for the future, but an extraordinary testimony, a treasure. I believe that it was not by chance that Arnaud Desjardins made his films."-- Sogyal Rinpoche http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tantric_Buddhism http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahamudra http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dzogchen

by Paul Kacynski Through Professor Rev. Dr. James Kenneth Powell II, opensourcebuddhism.org Perhaps the title overstates the case, but this has been said of the great Madhyamaka scholar who, we are told, brought back the Perfection of Wisdom Sutras from Nagas, hence his name. No more influential thinker exists in Buddhism, apart from the Buddha Siddhartha himself. As he says in his introductory work, the Stanzas on the Root of the Middle Way, he is he claims, merely a commentator on the Buddha's doctrine of "no self". He extends this idea to include all phenomena and as the brilliant expositor of Mahayana tradition, is revered as an ancestor of all the Mahayana schools, from Tibet to Japan. Very nice job, offered in the first person.

Few word's of Loving Kindness , thought of sharing to all my friends. AN EXPOSITION OF THE METTA SUTTA. THE DISCOURSE ON LOVING-KINDNESS _________________________________________ http://www.aimwell.org/Books/Pesala/Metta/metta.html ________________________________________ Metta Sutta ----------- Some 500 monks who went into the jungle to practice meditation were disturbed and frightened by animals and social people, whereupon they returned and reported the matter to the Buddha. The Buddha then advised the monks to go back to the same place but armed with the sword of Metta (Loving-kindness) for their protection. The Buddha then delivered this Sutta to teach them how to practice this loving-kindness. The monks returned to the jungle and radiated their loving-kindness to animals and social people and thereafter they continued with their meditation without any hindrance. These same animals and social sprits who had earlier created disturbances, later repented and paid their respects to the monks. This is, therefore, an important Sutta for the devotees to recite to radiate their loving-kindness to every living being. By doing so they can overcome any disturbances, find peace and happiness for themselves and help others to live peacefully by practicing this great virtue. This is the part of the Nichiren Buddhism practice called Gongyo. Normally it is chanted quite a bit faster but here it is recited by Robert E. Lee slow enough to help you learn it. Gongyo is a partial reading of two different chapters of the Lotus Sutra the highest teaching of Shakyamuni Buddha.

This is a series of images over Alan Wallace's lecture, "The Conscious Universe: Where Buddhism and Physics Converge". I was originally going to create this type of video for his whole lecture but in total it's rather long and it would take me many hours! :D So heres the link to the mp3's. I've read a portion of a few of his books regarding this subject. I highly recommend listening to these! There free, and provide very interesting and meaningful information! :) This video ends at minute 12:54 in the first lecture. http://www.sbinstitute.com/LecturesMP3.html Check B Alan Wallace website for his bio, he practiced many years as a monk with the Dalai Lama, and then came back to the west to get a degree in physics. http://www.alanwallace.org/profile.htm Please check out my recently finished video project: Where Science and Buddhism Meet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qj_i7YqDwJA
